Nanako Kono 幸野菜々子
Nanako Kono was born in 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. She moved from Japan to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2016. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis on painting, drawing, and printmaking and a minor in Art History at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2022. Now she is in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Nanako makes paintings about miscommunication in comics format that incorporate drawn elements, print media, sewing, and collage. She is inspired by the comic strip, employing devices such as rectangular panels, speech balloons, and recurring characters in her paintings. The process of learning English as a second language increased her interest in linguistics and semiotics. She could no longer guarantee that the sign/symbol/word she chose conveyed the meaning she intended to the people around her. This new focus on miscommunication caused her to reflect on other contributing factors, including power imbalances and non literal way of using language. The imperfect features of language and signs, and the tension that miscommunication can create in an interaction, provide inspiration for the narrative she construct with the characters. By treating speech balloon as physical object in her world, she depicts the intention and motivation behind the expressed language. She creates flat color block composition emphasizing the superficial characteristics of language and uses textures as a trace of how the message gains the full weight/meanings/ and values in the process of conversation.
1999年東京生まれ。2016年の秋にアメリカ、ラスベガスに移住し、2022年にネバダ大学ラスベガス校にて美術学部絵画、ドローイング、版画学科専攻、学士号取得。同大学にて美術史副専攻。現在はシカゴ美術館附属大学にて大学院の絵画、ドローイング学科在学中。
漫画とイラストを描き始めたのが美術界に入ることとなった最初のきっかけで、現在の絵画制作も漫画やコミックスの影響を強く受けている。自分のキャラクターであるローリーや他のキャラクターを使用して、コミュニケーションとその中で生まれる不安を探求している。漫画で使われる吹き出し表現とその意図された目的を通じて、発声できないコミュニケーションの方法を探求する。絵画制作を通して記号論と言語学にヒントを得て、コミュニケーションを読み解く手がかりを模索する。言語活動には複数の層の構造があり、その中での相手と自分の間で起こる意味作用には無限の解釈がある。それは決して一方通行で固定されたものではなく、双対性を持った流動的なものである。
